No matter how much they celebrated at the CDU Headquarters, Mertz is aware of the difficulties of the next day – Mertz as well as Weidel and the Left the winners
From whatever perspective you can see it was a historic day for Germany. The far -right has the largest percentage in the history of the country after the war. Its leader, Alice Weidel, insisted on Sunday night talking about the change of page that the German people qualified. The two traditional parties that defined the fate of the Transition, Christian Democrats and Social Democrats, have their historical lower rates.
No matter how much they celebrated at the CDU headquarters, Friedrich Mertz is aware of the difficulties of the next day. If he keeps his commitment not to work with the AfD, then his only choice is to co -ordinate with the SPD, obviously not under all Solds.
Mertz, however, like Weidel and the Left are the winners of the night. At percentages, but also in the positions they will understand the next day within the political system. One will finally become Chancellor, the second will be the leader of the opposition, Die Linke will be able to claim to be the “other voice”, which some thought had finally mounted.
This can hardly be claimed by the Greens. Not only because they lost about two and a half units, but because they are essentially consolidated as a systemic, convenient party that has lost its radicalism and contact with the younger generation. It is still based on reflexes of an electoral client that built with trouble but is constantly declining.
In the losers, Christian Lindner of the Liberals who, as they all show, bids farewell to politics, but few will cry for it. But Overf Saltz is the biggest loser of the night. Maybe he feels wrong with history. He chose to endure an election campaign that looked like torture, as long as his percentages did not say to peel off. He inherited a country that had taken a handbrake, but he could not solve it either. It remains to be seen whether his successor can re -breath to a permanently vegetable party.
The next day will be difficult. The formation of the new government should not be late. Everyone agrees with this. We will probably know the powerful “numerical” combinations at night or tomorrow morning. The political preferences of each candidate protagonist of developments will be seen in the coming weeks.
