The European Commission will launch a strategic dialogue on steel, with the aim of drawing a decisive course for the future of European steelmaking. The initiative underlines the Commission’s steady commitment to this strategic sector, recognizing its decisive contribution to innovation, development, employment and the wider strategic autonomy of the European Union (EU).

OR President of the Committee Ursula von der Laien He said: “Steelworks is a crucial industry of our European Single Market. At the same time, this industry is extremely important in combating climate change. The strategic dialogue will contribute to the development of a specific action plan to tackle the unique challenges of this industry as part of the transition of industry to clean energy. We want to ensure that European steelmaking is competitive and sustainable in the long run. “

Stephan Sezurne, executive vice -president of prosperity and industrial strategy, said: “Europe has a plan for its industry: we must produce more, produce clearly and produce European. This plan starts with our most strategic sectors: steelworks is one of them. We need to protect steelworks from unfair external competition and enhance our own production of pure European steel. This is not just good for steelworks. It is good for a whole number of other steel -dependent branches. Consequently, this action plan is an important component of our industrial competitiveness and our overall financial security. “

The dialogue will be based on the foundations laid by the recently published EU competitiveness compass and the forthcoming EU’s agreement on a clean industry. The key points of debate will include ways to enhance competitiveness and circularity, promote net transition, charisma and electricity, as well as to ensure fair commercial relations and equitable terms of competition internationally. More information is included in the relevant note of basic concepts, based on discussions in the context of strategic dialogue.
