To the crucial question of whether the United States will provide security guarantees in Ukraine, Trump responded negatively, stressing that Europe will take on this responsibility
United States President Donald Trump has announced that Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski will visit Washington on Friday to sign an agreement on rare earths and other issues.
Trump’s statement was made during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday. The US president stressed that the agreement, which he described as “very large” would include not only cooperation for rare land, but also other issues important to the two countries’ relationship.
To the crucial question of whether the United States will provide security guarantees in Ukraine, Trump responded negatively, stressing that Europe would assume this responsibility.
At the same time, Trump reiterated his commitment to ensure that the United States would take back their money.
In his placement, Trump argued that the US was in a “very bad position” because of the previous administration, noting “but we managed to make a deal where we would get our money back and earn a lot of money in the future.”
Trump said US taxpayers should not pay the Ukraine account “more than Europeans pay”.
The US president also argued that an agreement on a ceasefire is near, saying: “We will make an agreement with Russia and Ukraine to stop killing people.”
Trump described the deal as “very important and great success” and told reporters who were in the room that his team would keep them informed of progress.
Zelenski: “Security guarantees have not yet been agreed”
Earlier, Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski had described the evolution as a “beginning” and a “framework agreement”, stressing that its success would depend on talks with Donald Trump.
“It’s a start, it’s just a framework agreement,” he told reporters in Kiev, which can provide security guarantees in Ukraine to ensure a sustainable and fair peace. “This deal can be a great success or just disappear,” Zelenski explained. “This will depend on our talks with President Trump,” he hopes to meet on Friday.
The Ukrainian president said he intends to ask Trump directly if he is going to stop help with Ukraine.
“There is a work date (…) on Friday,” the Ukrainian president said during the press conference. “My question (to Mr Trump) will be very straight: will the United States cut off or not? And if it will no longer help, can we buy weapons? “
“The US agreement on minerals will be signed at a ministerial level and does not need ratification,” he said.
The agreement has not yet been finalized, the Ukrainian leader told reporters in Kiev on Wednesday, saying it takes time to study the plan and consult European allies. But he said the plan was acceptable, as some of the original requirements of the Trump team have retired.
At the same time, he said he could not yet confirm his trip to Washington on Friday as the teams work on the issue.
He also wants to discuss with Trump the opportunity to use frozen Russian assets for the development of mining resources, the market for weapons and rebuilding the country. The Ukrainian president stressed that Ukraine should know what it might count from the US.
Zelenski also said that no debt to the US should be repaid in the wording of the mineral agreement.
According to the BBC, Zelenski said he hoped that an initial US agreement on minerals “will lead to further agreements”, but confirmed that US security guarantees have not yet been agreed.
He referred to a joint fund in which Ukraine would contribute 50% of the revenue from natural resources, but added that it was “too early to talk about money”.
He also said that his team pressed the Americans to include a proposal to support security guarantees, although it has not yet been decided.
