The Trump government is holding direct talks with Hamas on the release of American hostages held in Gaza and the possibility of a wider war ending, according to the Axios news network.

The talks are being held by US government expert on hostage issues, Adam Beller, and this is the first time Washington has been directly involved in negotiations with Hamas, which have been described as a terrorist organization since 1997.

Meetings between Beller and Hamas officials took place in Doha in recent weeks.

While the Trump government had consulted with Israel on the possibility of Hamas talks, Israel was informed of some aspects of talks through other channels, one source said.

The talks were partially focused on the liberation of the American hostages, which falls within Beller’s jurisdiction.

They also included discussions of a broader agreement that would have released all hostages that remain in Hamas’ hands and a long -term truce, according to sources. However, no agreement has yet been reached.

White House envoy, Steve Whitkov, was planning to travel to Doha this week to meet with Qatar’s prime minister on negotiations for a ceasefire, but canceled the trip on Tuesday night, as there was no progress on the side of Hamas.

Trump’s approach to the conflict differs significantly from President Biden, as he has repeatedly threatened Hamas with “hell” and has proposed a “occupation” of Gaza by the US.

The direct negotiation with Hamas, especially without Israel’s consent, is another step that had not had previous US governments.
