At least 16 members of Syrian security forces were killed in clashes with armed supporters of the previous regime, Bashar al -Assad, reported a Syrian television channel affiliated with the new government.

According to Syria TV, these conflicts continue in the Jamelech area, in the province of Latakia, the Alawite minority stronghold from which the Assad family comes from.

Sana’s official news agency, citing a source from the Ministry of Defense, reported that Assad’s “remnants of paramilitary groups” have launched coordinated attacks in various areas. Aid is on the way to the Jamelech area, he added.

Rehabilitation and maintenance of security throughout Syria is the largest and most urgent challenge for the new government that took power after Islamist rebels overthrew Assad on December 8, 2024.

“The armed groups facing security forces in the Latakia region belong to the war criminal Schelill al -Hanan, who committed the worst massacres against the Syrian people,” said the Sana official.

The new authorities have recently been conducting security operations in Latakia and the neighboring province of Tartus. Earlier today, the situation escalated to Bait Anana, the village from which Swellyl al -Hanan comes when residents prevented the arrest of a person who was suspected of weapons smuggling, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Security forces started a business but were confronted with armed men.

Earlier, Sana reported that “armed men shot against the men and vehicles of the Ministry of Defense near the village, killing a man (a member of the security forces) and injuring many others.”

According to the Observatory, the Security Forces opened helicopters against armed men in the village of Bait Anana and the surrounding forest area, while bombing a neighboring village with the artillery. The local religious leaders of the Alawites called on residents to “demonstrate peacefully” tomorrow Friday.

This week, four civilians and two members of the security forces were killed in Latakia during the army operations.
