Hungary will not leave the European Union but will resist Brussels’ attempts to undermine its sovereignty, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told his party today, Fidesz.
The nationalist Orban, who is facing a difficult election next year, for the first time in more than ten years, was re-elected president of Fidesz today.
“After the communist bureaucracy … we do not want new orders now from Brussels,” Orban told cheering party representatives, adding that Hungary would reject Western liberalism.

In power since 2010, 58-year-old Orban has promoted himself as a supporter of Hungary’s cultural identity against Muslim immigration to Europe and a protector of Christian values against Western liberalism.
This policy has made him popular at home, especially among Fidesz voters, but has drawn criticism from human rights groups and LGBTQI activists.
Orban said the EU needed to be reformed and that Hungary’s goal was to achieve change, not leave the Union it joined in 2004.

In the parliamentary elections, which will probably take place in April 2022, Orban will face a united front of opposition parties that includes the Socialists, the Liberals and the former far-right, now center-right, Jobbik.
The six-party alliance is led by Peter Markey-Zai, a 49-year-old conservative Catholic, father of seven and mayor of a small town that seems to embody the traditional values publicly advocated by Orban and considered a fierce opponent.
