Emphasized the need to build a strong European defense industry but also to ensure a strong negotiating position in Ukraine
The European Union should not give up the effort to help Ukraine resist Russia’s aggression, Polish Finance Minister Andrei Domanski said on Tuesday in view of the Ecofin meeting in Brussels today, at Warsaw.
“We must definitely put further pressure on Russia,” Domanski told reporters. “We will also discuss sanctions today. We see the sanctions work. We see that the Russian economy is getting more and more weakened, “he added.
Europe continues to support Ukraine as it is facing the increasingly aggressive rhetoric of US President Donald Trump and its threats to limit the security umbrella provided by the United States in Epirus.
These developments have awakened Europe’s policy executives for the challenge facing the bloc and the need to be activated immediately.
“We will naturally focus on fiscal rules and how to allow countries that want to spend more on our defense, our safety, how to allow them to spend more in the context of fiscal rules,” Domanski added.
Asked what is the best way to enhance Europe’s potential, he did not refer to specific media, limiting to answer that “many suggestions have fallen on the table”.
“We are ready to discuss them all, as we believe that there is not only one tool that can be used,” the Polish finance minister said. “We need to consider multiple solutions and some will be suitable for specific countries. We believe it is time to act. We need to build a powerful European defense industry and need to ensure funding for this huge re -embodiment project that Europe needs, “he added.
His Finnish counterpart, Rika Poura, agreed, noting that “at the moment our immediate need is to secure Ukraine a strong negotiating position to ensure a just and lasting peace.”
“In order to achieve this, we must continue to tighten sanctions in order to be more effective and at the moment we have to proceed and seize assets to ensure a strong position to negotiate peace,” the cigar added.
However, not everyone agrees with the idea of seizing Russian assets. The new Austrian Finance Minister Marcus Markuer, has recommended prudence.
“I think the seizure would be about a new path and we must discuss it at European level,” he said, adding that “there should be broad consensus on this issue and not a majority decision.”
