Starmer urged Trump on Monday during telephone communication not to target British steel and aluminum manufacturers

The United Kingdom will not immediately impose US duties, even if it is affected by US duties on steel and aluminum imports. The British Government will follow a ‘Calm and measuredĀ»Approach, in order to
keep the country away from a potential transatlantic trade war. “You’re not going to see immediate tariffs on tariffs,” a British official said as the Financial Times writes.
Starmer urged the US president on Monday on a telephone conversation not to target British steel and aluminum manufacturers, while at the same time saying that duties will also hit British exports.
The British government hopes that Trump will largely exclude the United Kingdom from duties, under a possible financial agreement with the US, which will initially focus on technology, which was discussed between the two leaders during their meeting at the White House last month.
Jonathan Reynolds, the Minister of Business and Commerce, is expected to underline the already existing support of the government in the British steel industry, aiming to prevent the tension in trade with Washington. According to
Reynolds’ associates, the minister may propose some form of response to US duties, but this will not imply an immediate wave of duties, as happened in 2018, when the United Kingdom, as a member of the European Union, reacted to duties.
of Trump by imposing duties on US products.
