Russian authorities block the website of the French channel Euronews

The Russian media regulator today blocked access to the website of the French channel Euronews, another banned media in Russia at a time of heightened control of information related to the attack in Ukraine.

According to Russian news agencies, Roskomnadzor blocked the website of the channel euronews.com and its Russian version ru.euronews.com at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office. The reason for this exclusion was not specified.

Since the start of the Russian intervention in Ukraine on February 24, the Russian authorities have significantly strengthened the control over the information transmitted via the Internet, one of the last places of free expression in the country.

Many Russian and foreign media outlets, including the BBC, have been denied access to US social media. Facebook and Instagram were described as “extremist” by a Moscow court on Monday.

The access on Twitter also limited.

Last week, Roskomnadzor accused Google and US video giant YouTube of “terrorist” activities, the first step towards a possible ban.

Authorities also introduced two new criminal offenses in early March: one for transmitting information that “defames” the Russian military, and the other for transmitting “false” information about Russian troops.

The latter offense carries sentences of up to 15 years in prison and is of particular concern to dissidents and the independent media, who fear prosecution for any denunciation of the attack.
