The first attempts to establish pan -European rules regarding discount decisions from the right of driving began more than 60 years ago
The European Commission welcomes the provisional agreement reached between the European Parliament and the Council on a key legislative file aimed at improving road safety.
The first attempts to establish pan -European rules on the decisions of discount from the right to driving began more than 60 years ago. The new directive will finally ensure that the consequences for drivers who commit serious offenses in a Member State will be the same throughout the European Union (EU). According to the rules applicable, the decisions of discount from the right to driving in one country may not be recognized in another, allowing violators to continue to lead others at risk.
Through a system of mutual recognition, discount decisions issued in a Member State will now apply throughout the EU for serious offenses such as excessive speed (50 km/h above the limit), driving driving and causing death or serious injury.
Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas said: “This agreement is another important step for road safety across Europe. The new rules for discount decisions from the right to driving will close the windows that allow dangerous drivers to avoid sanctions by leaving outside the border. Last year, almost 20,000 lives were lost on the streets of the EU. This initiative will be a crucial element in achieving our goal of reducing traffic accidents by 50% by 2030. “
Today’s agreements follow in line with yesterday’s agreement to modernize the rules on driving licenses. Now, the European Parliament and the Council will officially approve the new directive, which will begin to apply 20 days after its publication in the EU official.
