US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that it would impose additional duties from 25% to 50% across Russian oil if it considers that Moscow is undermining its efforts to end the war in Ukraine. These duties could come into force within a month if a ceasefire is not reached.

According to NBC News, Trump said he was angry and “furious” when Russian President Vladimir Putin questioned the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski. Trump also said he was planning to talk to Putin this week.

During his election campaign for the 2024 presidential election, Trump has repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine and has placed particular emphasis on the issue of taking over his duties on January 20. He has called for new elections in Ukraine and called Zelenski “dictator”.

On Friday, Putin suggested that Ukraine could be put under a kind of temporary administration in order to hold new elections and sign basic agreements, which could actually remove Zelenski from power.

“If Russia and I cannot reach an agreement on ending bloodshed in Ukraine and if I think Russia is responsible … I will impose additional oil duties across the oil extracted from Russia,” Trump said.

“This means that if you buy oil from Russia, you cannot do businesses in the United States,” he added. “There will be a 25% duty across the oil, a 25% to 50% duty across the oil.”

Trump said the duties in Russian oil would come into force within a month if there is no ceasefire agreement.

He said that Putin knows that he is angry with him, but added that he maintains a “very good relationship with him” and that “the rage is quickly dissolved … if it does the right thing.”
