From 2013 to 2018 Italy’s population exceeded 60 million, with the Italian population moving away from this ‘landmark’
The demographic threatens Italy. The neighbor seems to be facing a sharp demographic problem, bigger than Greece, as births are constantly decreasing.
New births in Italy reached a new historic low in 2024, the ISTAT Statistical Service announced Monday, further immersing the country into a seemingly irreversible demographic crisis.
Last year noted 370,000 birthsaccording to Istat, marking the 16th consecutive annual decline, and the lowest number of Italian integration in 1861. In the past births exceeded the 1 million
In the meantime, there were 281,000 more deaths than births in 2024. As a result, the Italian population declined by 37,000 in 58.93 millionaccording to a decade trend.
From 2013 to 2018, the population of Italy exceeded 60 million, with the Italian population moving away from this “milestone”.
At the same time, Istat said 191,000 Italians left the country last year. This is the largest “brain drain” this century, and a 20% increase since the previous year, although ISTAT said that a regulatory change could be a key factor that explains the sharp increase.
Last year, Italy fined Italians who live abroad and were not enrolled as expatriates in the foreign country in which they live, which may have pushed many to settle their position.
Foreigners represented 9.2% of Italy’s population in 2024, or 5.4 million people.
Italy’s ever -decreasing fertility (since 2016 onwards) is considered a state of emergency, but despite the successive governments that have pledged to take substantial measures, none has so far been able to halt the decline, including the Melonian government.
