US President Joe Biden’s popularity plummeted again this week, at 40%, a clear warning for the Democratic Party to try to retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections.
According to a poll conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, conducted in space March 21-2254% of Americans disapprove of the president’s performance, at a time when the country is facing inflationary pressures while at the same time Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has intensified geopolitical concerns.
Compared to the previous week, the percentage of those who approve of Biden has decreased by three weeks. His Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, had the same popularity rate, at 40%, in mid-March of his second year in office. In December 2017 its popularity had dropped to 33%.
Survey participants cited the economy as their main concern and war as their second concern.
Biden’s popularity began to decline in mid-August, amid the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan but also at a time when Covid-19 deaths were on the rise.
Although Biden tried to drop the “political temperature” after Trump’s divisive presidency, according to opinion polls, Americans remain divided. While 77% of self-proclaimed Democrats say they are satisfied with the president’s performance, only 10% of Republicans and 27% of independents approve of his work.
The poll was conducted online in all US. A total of 1,005 adults were interviewed, including 432 Democrats and 366 Republicans. The margin of statistical error is 4 points.
