Speaking to RIA Novosti, the Russian official said that the takeover of the highway from Crimea to Mariupol, will create a corridor which will connect the peninsula with Donbass.

He added that this corridor and the Crimean land bridge will be a transit territory connecting the Caucasus region, the ports on the northern shores of the Black Sea and industrial centers in Donetsk and Lugansk.

It is worth noting that analysts from the outset appreciated that this plan was the reason why Russia is besieged and pounded so much the Mariupol.

The Russian forces have been bombing the city for weeks, which has been leveled as more than 80% of the houses have been destroyed. According to Human Rights Watch, the residents themselves describe their city as a “landscape of hell.”

Ukraine has asked for help for the city and refused to hand it over to the Russians.
