Movement comes amid growing frustration between Eastern and Central Europe governments, which bear the financial burden of defense spending
In the EU, the adoption of a new mechanism for funding defense is being consulted in the EU to strengthen NATO border, thus expressing its support in Eastern European countries, as said by Economy Commissioner Valdis Dobrovskis after the EU ministers.
As Dobrovsky argued, the EU is willing to examine options that have not yet fallen on the table and did not exclude to give subsidies for them vulnerable eastern countries of the block.
The move comes amid increasing frustration between the governments of Eastern and Central Europe, which bear the financial burden of defense spending.
A European diplomat from EU Eastern Bloc country told Politico that even if countries at the border with Russia increase their defense spending by 20%, they would not be enough as their economies are very small.
‘Need everyone [να αυξήσουμε τις αμυντικÎÏ‚ τους δαπάνες]”Said the diplomat, who maintains his anonymity.
Dobrovskis agreed that countries bordering Russia and Belarus were facing great dangers and probably needed further support. He said that during the meeting of the EU finance ministers he argued that a supranational equipment fund should be set up that would allow both EU countries and non -EU countries to raise money to re -equip Epirus. He added that the Fund could help commit outside the EU and bypass the need for unanimous agreement by potentially bypassing some of the strictest financial rules of the EU.
However, big players, such as Germany, do not wish to support the project and countries such as Spain-who wish to avoid the addition of debt-support new EU bonds, similar to those used at the Covid-19 crisis.
At Warsaw’s meeting, Spain Minister Carlos Courepo proposed a special purpose vehicle that would provide grants and loans for pan -European defense projects. Dobrovskis said the proposal would be discussed in the upcoming negotiations on the EU budget.
However, proposals for grants will probably face harsh resistance, especially from fiscal conservative nations such as the Netherlands, which historically opposes large -scale grants between Member States.
At present, the Commission seems to keep its choices open. But as the negotiations on the next long -term EU budget begin, the tension between solidarity and self -esteem appears once again.
Earlier today, Swedish Prime Minister, Ulphrison Christenson argued that NATO is under discussion to increase the target for defense spending above 3%,
