The Supreme Court issued a final judgment, judging that his behavior could undermine citizens’ confidence in buses
A bus driver in Japanwith 29 years of service, lost the lump sum of his retirement, 73,000 eurosbecause he stole an amount corresponding to 6 euros from passenger tickets.
The city of Kyoto fired the man, whose identity was not revealed, after being filmed by his bus security camera to embrace 6 euros (1,000 GEN) in 2022.
The driver appealed to justice against the city after the authorities deprived him of more than 73,000 euros (over 12 million yen). The man, who was sentenced to first instance, saw his sentence be annulled in the Court of Appeal, with the court estimating that he was excessive.
But yesterday, the Supreme Court issued a final ruling in favor of the municipal authority and restored the original penalty, considering that its behavior could undermine citizens’ confidence in the system and the proper functioning of the bus service.
At the time of the incident, a group of five passengers got on the bus and had to pay 1,150 yards. The driver asked the passengers to drop 150 yards on the coin and then received a 1,000 -euro (6 -euro) banknote which he did not declare.
Although filmed, the man, who had been reprimanded by various incidents according to the court’s ruling, attempted to deny the fact when asked by his boss.
“Every bus driver works alone and manages public money. We take such a very serious way to take such actions, “Sinitsi Hirai, a Kyoto Public Transport Office official, told the French Agency today.
