Portugal’s new government, which will take office next week, will be the first in the country’s history with more women than men as ministers.
Of the 17 portfolios of the new administration, 9 will be headed by women.
It will also be the first time that Portugal will have a woman at the head of the Ministry of Defence. The mission will be in charge of sociologist Helena Carreiras, university professor and current president of the National Defense Institute.
The current Minister of the Presidency, Mariana Vieira da Silva, remained in office and was promoted to number two in the government.
The names were confirmed on Wednesday night (23) by the Prime Minister, António Costa.
Re-elected with an unexpected absolute majority in early elections in January, the socialist premier promoted a sweeping reshuffle in the cabinet.
