The U.S. Pentagon on Wednesday told reporters that Russian troops now adopt defensive positions north of Kievinstead of advancing, while Russian efforts to advance in other areas have stopped, the Guardian reports.
Jack Detsch, a Foreign Policy correspondent, wrote on Twitter that Ukraine’s counterattack near Kyiv had pushed Russian forces further away from the capital. Russian troops have been pushed 24 kilometers away in recent days, Detsch said.
The Pentagon added that Russia has now launched more than 1,200 missiles, said Jeff Seldin, Voice of America correspondent. He also said that Russian troops north of Kiev were now taking up defensive positions instead of continuing their offensive.
U.S. officials have said that when Russian forces begin to fortify, it means that they believe that they can not advance.
