The leader of Syrian diplomacy today called on the UN Security Council to “put pressure” on Israel to leave his country during his first UN intervention.

“We call on the Security Council to put pressure on Israel to withdraw from Syria and to implement the 1974 unraveling agreement,” Assad Al Simban said.

Following the fall of Bashar al -Assad’s regime, Israel developed troops in the UN -controlled Security Zone, which has been dividing Israeli and Syrian forces in Golan’s strategic highlands since 1974.

“We have repeatedly stated Syria’s commitment not to be a threat to its neighbors or any country in the world, including Israel,” the Syrian minister said, also denouncing Israeli blows against his country.

“This ongoing aggression destroys our efforts to rebuild and undermines the peace and security we seek to achieve,” he added. “These actions are not only a blatant violation of international law and sovereignty of Syria, but also an immediate threat to regional stability.”

At the same time, it was in favor of removing all sanctions imposed on Assad’s regime, a “crucial stage for the transformation of Syria by a country known for its dark past into a strong partner for international peace, prosperity and economic development”.

Economic sanctions are largely affected by the country, where according to the UN, 90% of the Syrians live below the poverty line.

Finally, the minister spoke of a “historic day” for Syria, having previously raised the new flag of his country at the United Nations headquarters in New York, next to those of the other 192 Member States.

“This flag is not just a symbol, but the proclamation of a new life born through suffering, representing a future that emerges through durability and a promise of change after years of suffering.”

The flag presents three red stars on a white stripe between a green and a black stripe. About five months after the fall of Bashar al -Assad, the country’s new flag was raised at the UN headquarters.
