An unknown man was attacked today by the president of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) of the opposition, Ozgur Ozel.

The perpetrator waited for him at the exit of the Ataturk Cultural Center in Taksim Square and when Ozel was coming out he began to hit him in the face. Eyewitnesses say that during the attack the perpetrator shouted “I am a grandson of the Ottomans”.

Ozgur Ozel is in good health while Turkish interior minister Ali Gerlikaya announced that the perpetrator was arrested.

The incident happened at a time when Ozel was leaving a memorial service in Istanbul for DEM pro -Kurdish MP Sir Surrey Oder.

Oder died yesterday in a hospital in Istanbul where he was hospitalized for the past 18 days after a heart attack.

In recent months he had taken on a mediation role in disarming the Kurdish PKK organization.
