The Jordanian authorities removed nearly 1,800 tourists from Petra on Sunday after floods in the area, a state television official said.

“Rescue groups … evacuated hundreds of tourists from Petra after sudden floods that hit the archaeological site”said local official Yazan Mohadin, according to Al-Mamlaka TV, according to The Times of Israel.

“The number of tourists who visited the site today amounted to 1,785 and the political defense groups evacuated most of them”he said, adding that no casualties were recorded.

Jordan’s meteorological authority posted a video showing floods hitting the ancient city.

Similar evacuations have occurred in the past, as the area is hit by more and more frequent rains and thunderstorms.

Petra, famous for its amazing temples, carved on pink rocks, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was voted as one of the seven wonders of the world in an online poll in 2007.
