Brazil is “clearly opposed” to Russia’s exclusion from the G20

by

The Brazilian foreign minister said on Thursday that the government of President Zaich Bolsonaro was “clearly opposed” to the idea of excluding Russia from the G20, which is mainly promoted by the United States.

“We have seen initiatives appear in various international organizations in order to expel Russia from these entities or to suspend its participation.

“Brazil is clearly opposed (…) to our traditional position in favor of multilateral co-operation and international law,” Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Franca told the Senate during a debate on the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. .

“The most important thing right now is for all these forums, the G20, the WTO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, to continue to function fully. “In order to function fully, all countries, including Russia, must be present.”

US President Joe Biden on Thursday called for Russia to be expelled from the G20. The country had already been expelled from the G8 – which became the G7 – after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

He acknowledged, however, that the decision was left to the G20 itself, a body set up to foster dialogue between the G7’s traditional industrial powers and emerging economic giants such as China, Brazil and Russia.

Indonesia, the country holding the rotating G20 presidency this year, announced on Thursday that it would remain “impartial”. China has already estimated that Vladimir Putin should be present at the summit to be held later this year.
