Germany’s new Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and US President Donald Trump have agreed to quickly resolve trade disputes in their first telephone conversation since Merz assumed his duties at the beginning of this week, a German spokesman said.

Trump congratulated Mertz on taking over his duties, the Chancellor spokesman said, while Mertz assured him that “80 years after the end of World War II, the United States remains an indispensable friend and partner of Germany”.

The two leaders also agreed on the need for close cooperation with the aim of ending the war in Ukraine, the spokesman said.

Mertz has adopted a highly critical of the Trump government, warning that Europe had to operate more independently of the United States, given Trump’s apparent indifference to its fate while also criticizing its “outrageous” comparing them to hostile interventions from Russia.

In addition, he was also critical of the extensive imposition of tariff duties, which are particularly harmful to Germany’s export -oriented economy, demanding the complete abolition of duties between the European Union and the United States.
