In a statement, SBU said it had detained two suspected agents – former members of the Ukrainian Army, who had been recruited by the Hungarian Army Intelligence Service, supplying them with cash and special equipment to communicate without realizing it.

Both referred to a senior Hungarian Military Intelligence Officer, whose identity is already known in the service.

According to Ukrainian spying, one of the agents, a 40 -year -old former soldier from the Beregov area, was recruited and put into a “standby state” in 2021 and began his action in September 2024.

There was no immediate response to a request for comment by the Hungarian government.

Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO, two blocks with which Ukraine maintains a close alliance in its war with Russia. However, there has been tension in relations between the two countries several times.

Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban is cautious about providing Western aid to Ukraine. He has also maintained relationships with Vladimir Putin, which has led him to confront most of the other European leaders, trying to isolate the Russian president after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
