Today in Luxembourg, the place where the born Robert Sumanwe are celebrating the historic Declaration of 9 May 1950, which laid the foundations for the European Union as we know it today.

Seventy -five years ago, on a continent that was trying to orthodox after the devastating consequences of World War II, visionary leaders decided to jointly manage the production and carbon market and steel to ensure constant peace in Europe. Their simple but pioneering effort – to replace historical rivalry with common domination, through economic and political integration – has prepared the ground for a time of prosperity, peace, democracy, solidarity and cooperation in Europe.

Over time, more and more countries have decided to participate in a common European venture, demonstrating the attractiveness of common values, democracy and unity for the peoples of our continent.

Today, our work on peace in Europe, the very essence of the Suman Declaration, has not been completed. Europe is once again facing very big challenges. Russia’s attack on Ukraine has brought the war to our doorstep. Global tensions are increasing. Climate change affects the lives of millions of people in Europe and around the world.

We reassure our deep commitment to a European venture that unites our peoples, as well as to enlargement as the best geopolitical investment of the European Union. We multiply our efforts to ensure uninterrupted economic prosperity, greater economic competitiveness and social progress for European citizens. We take unprecedented measures to enhance our security and defense and our strategic autonomy. We are determined to support an international rules based on the multilateral approach and act as a credible partner at the global level.

Europe is the dominant of its destiny. We support Ukraine in all its efforts for just and lasting peace. The spirit of the Suman Declaration remains alive. It will continue to guide us as we unite our strengths to ensure peace, prosperity, solidarity and cooperation in Europe.
