I find a shame that an American president may threaten an ally, the former NATO Secretary said to Trump’s statements
Copenhagen’s reactions continue to Donald Trump’s statements that he does not even exclude the use of force to acquire Greenland, with former Danish prime minister and former NATO Secretary General. Anders Fogh Rasmusento speak of “a shameless unheard of threat against a narrow ally”.
“I find it shameful that an American president may threaten an ally. Denmark is one of the closest and most reliable allies in the United States, “he said, speaking from the Danish capital. “It is of concern,” he noted.
Trump had referred to Greenland’s acquisition already during his first term as president, but has reinstated more perseverance during his second term. In a recent interview earlier in the month, he refused to even exclude the use of force to acquire the island of 57,000 inhabitants, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
“I don’t exclude it. I’m not saying I’m going to do it, but I don’t rule out anything. No, not there. We need Greenland very much. Greenland has very few residents, whom we will take care of, love them all. But we need it for international security, “Trump told NBC on May 4.
The Wall Street Journal also said Trump has instructed US intelligence services to intensify information collection activities on the Arctic Island. The Danish government called on the US ambassador to express an official protest.
Last week, the Reuters reported that White House officials are considering investigating a free -bonding agreement with Greenland – a regime that is currently implemented in Pacific Island States, such as Micronia, Palau and the islands. In the context of such an agreement, the US will provide Greenland basic services, military protection and almost duty -free trade, while the island will maintain its independence.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who served as Prime Minister of Denmark from 2001 to 2009, stressed that Greenland “is part of Denmark and the Greenlanders do not want to become Americans”.
He added that, while under 1951 Treaty, the US has the right to install foundations in Greenland, in recent decades they have reduced their military presence on the island.
“The reality is that Greenland is part of NATO,” he said. “If the United States is not satisfied with Greenland’s defense … we would appreciate a support for defense cooperation with the US.”
