The case concerns the former headquarters of the Serbian army bombed by NATO in 1999
The Serbian authorities arrested a former state official on charges of falsifying documents to facilitate his company Jared Cousner To build a luxury hotel and houses in the capital of the Balkans.
The planning Trump Hotel BelgradeWith an estimated $ 500 million budget, it is one of the many investment movements of Koussner’s real estate in the region, whose leaders are willing to cultivate closer ties with his father -in -law, US President Donald Trump.
The project has already triggered reactions, as it requires demolition of what is left of the former Serbian army headquarters, a building that was largely destroyed by NATO’s bombing in 1999, when the alliance intervened to stop Serbia’s attack on Kosovo. This building has a high symbolism for Serbs.
The Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic said on Tuesday that Goran Vasic, a former head of the state service for the protection of cultural heritage, “abused his position”, falsified signatures in a document proposing the removal of the protection regime for the military building. Vasic was not able to comment.
This development may lead to folding the hitherto positive attitude of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, towards the project and his overall support for the US President and the business activities of the Trump family.
Vucic visited Florida last month with the expectation of meeting US President Donald Trump. However, the meeting was not held and the Serbian president interrupted his visit prematurely by citing health reasons.
Just a few days later, Vucic flew for Moscow at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
