The capital of Indonesia is being relocated to a new location on the island of Borneo, although only part of the island is part of the country, while the rest belongs to Malaysia and a small part to Brunei.
The decision to move the capital was put on the table about two years ago, because the current capital, Jakarta, sinks at a speed of about 25 cm every year.
The country’s lawmakers decided earlier this year that the new capital would be Nusadara in the Kalimantan jungle, located on one of Asia’s largest islands, Borneo.
It will build new government buildings, a presidential palace, and 100,000 new homes that will house 320,000 residents, including civil servants, military and police forces.
The transfer will officially start in 2024 and is expected to cost up to $ 32 billion.
Jakarta, meanwhile, is home to about 10 million people, while about 40 million people live in neighboring towns. At the moment, about half of Jakarta is below sea level, and according to the World Economic Forum, it is estimated that by 2050 95% of the capital may have disappeared, due to rising water levels, frequent floods. and intense glare of water leading to soil retreat.
It is worth noting that other countries have moved their capitals in the past. Myanmar, for example, moved its capital to a more central location in 2005, while in the 1950s Brazil created Brasilia on a vacant lot.
