The Portuguese are called today to elect their Members of Parliament For the third time by 2022, in an electoral process that could allow outgoing prime minister Luis Montenegro to increase the majority of the moderate right after a year in power.

Montenegro, a 52 -year -old lawyer, was the central figure of the election campaign, as he led the country prematurely to his resignation in March, amid complaints of a conflict of interest in a case related to the activities of his consultants.

“No one has ever been more transparent than me,” he said in his latest gathering, responding to the leader of the socialist opposition. Pedro Nuno Santoswho accused him of “mixing politics with businesses” taking money from private companies after taking on his duties.

In any case, public investigations show that “Portuguese voters show some tolerance for this kind of issue and that this clearly did not take the dimensions hoped by the opposition,” said Politics Filipa Raimondo, from the University of Lis.

The ruling coalition of the moderate right, the Democratic Alliance (AD), thus garnering 34% in the vote intention to 26% for the Socialist Party (PS), according to the latest poll released by local media.

The far right Chega party (Chega, “Enough”) may receive 19% of the vote, improving its performance compared to the March 2024 elections, and thus consolidate its position as a third political power in the country.

According to the same poll, Luis Modnegro’s AD is expected to secure up to 95 seats from Parliament’s 230, thereby staying below the threshold of 116 MPs equivalent to the absolute majority.

As Montenegro refuses to rule with the support of the far right, he hopes to form a stronger majority, concluding an agreement with the Liberal Initiative Party, which in the polls are 7% in the vote.

The ballots open at 08.00 (local time, 10:00 Greek time) and close at 20.00 (local time, 23.00 Greek time).
