The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology today raised the alert level for the Taal volcano near Manila, due to the “increased activity” observed.
The institute raised the alarm level to level 3 on a five-point scale, after a column of smoke began to rise from the volcano and seismic tremors were recorded around 7.22 p.m. (local time).
The volcano, located in Batanga County, 66 kilometers south of Manila, recorded a “limited fracture eruption, followed by continuous fracture activity that caused smoke to erupt at a distance of 1,500 meters and was accompanied by a volcanic eruption.”
“The magma invasion” in the main crater “could then lead to successive explosions,” the experts warned.
The institute advised residents to stay away from the volcano, while warning airlines to avoid flights over it.
The Taal volcano, one of the most active in the Philippines, last erupted in January 2020, displacing some 380,000 people and wreaking havoc on farms, homes and roads in Batanga Province.
