Despite the decision of F1 to hold the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia normally, 2nd in this year’s championship after bombing in Jeddah by Yemeni Houthi rebels, the drivers had a midnight meeting to decide for themselves if they wanted to fight.
After four hours locked in a room and with the team leaders conveying the developments to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, the pilots decided to compete in the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia.
The Houthi guerrillas targeted the Aramco oil facility, about 10km off the F1 track, and as a result of the bombing, the start of the second round of tests was delayed by 15 minutes on Friday (25/3).
Initially, the organizers, after a first meeting, announced that the Saudi Arabian GP will continue normally, while immediately after FP2 there was a second meeting, at the end of which Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali assured that there is security to continue the GP.
However, the drivers’ concern was reasonable and in the end it took their own meeting to … convince them to race.
