Lugansk: Announces referendum on joining Russia

by

The Russian-backed self-proclaimed People’s Republic Lugansk in the east Ukraine could hold a referendum on joining Russia soon, local leader Leonid Pasetsnik said today.

“I think in the near future a referendum will be held in the territory of democracy,” Pasetsnik was quoted as saying by a local news outlet. “People will exercise their ultimate constitutional right and express their opinion on joining the Russian Federation.”

Last month the Russia recognized the independence of its self-proclaimed democracies Lugansk and his Donetsk and shortly afterwards ordered the launch of a peacekeeping operation, as he called it.

At February 24the Russia sent tens of thousands of soldiers in Ukrainein a special operation as he called it in order to downgrade the military capabilities of its neighboring country and eliminate people who are characterized as dangerous nationalists.

The Ukrainian forces have viewed strong resistance and the West has imposed sweeping sanctions in Russia in an attempt to force her to withdraw her forces.
