Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski said on Friday that Russia is doing everything to ensure that talks in Istanbul on June 2 will have no effect.
“In order for a meeting to make sense, its agenda must be clear and the negotiations are properly prepared. Unfortunately, Russia is doing everything to ensure that the next possible meeting will not produce any results, “he told X.
Ukraine requires Moscow to share its peace memorandum before the conversations.
It is noted that Senators Richard Blumental, a Democrat from Connecticut, and Lindsay Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, met today with Volodimir Zelenski in Ukraine. The meeting takes place as the two senators are promoting a inter -party bill on imposing stricter sanctions on Russia, which enjoys overwhelming support on the Senate.
Their appeal for a tougher response to Russia’s growing aggression comes as the White House and President Trump have expressed their indignation at the ongoing Russian aggression. However, this rage has not so far led to any punitive action.
Kyiv: “Moscow is delaying negotiations”
At the same time, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Simbicha reiterated Kiev’s commitment today to continue talks in Turkey. He stressed, however, that Ukraine is still expecting Russia to submit a formal document describing in detail its proposals for a possible peace deal.
“We also expect a memorandum on the Russian side, as announced. We expect it in advance, “Simbicha told a joint press conference in Kiev with Fidan. “This had also promised the American side,” he said.
Moscow will submit its memo, which focuses on overcoming the “main causes” of the conflict during Monday’s meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
For their part, Ukrainian officials emphasize that the preliminary study of the Russian peacekeeping memorandum is essential for a meaningful and productive dialogue in the next round of talks.
Kiev has already submitted its own memorandum, which describes its vision of a sustainable peace agreement, both to the United States and Russia. Keith Kogg, US special envoy to Ukraine, confirmed the receipt of the Ukrainian document, describing it as “good enough” and “reasonable”.
However, Ukraine has not yet finally pledged to participate in talks scheduled for June 2.
On Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Kremlin’s adviser, Vladimir Mentinski, will again lead the Russian delegation in the second round of Russia -Ukraine talks in Constantinople, bringing with him a new name.
The first round of the negotiations in Istanbul, earlier in the month, had little results. Immediately afterwards, Russia intensified its military attack, launching mass attacks on Ukrainian cities and opening a new front in the northeast of the country.
Following the stagnation of the original talks and the escalation of hostilities, US President Donald Trump allegedly expressed discomfort over Vladimir Putin’s attitude, implying that he is starting to doubt Moscow’s sincere intention.
