The European Union expresses “deep regret” for Donald Trump’s new duties in steel and aluminum, which “undermine current efforts to resolve a solution” with the United States, as the European Commission said today.

“Unless a mutually acceptable solution is found,” European countermeasures “will automatically come into force on July 14, perhaps even earlier if conditions require it”he said a spokesman, stressing that the EU was “ready” to pay back.

Donald Trump’s announcement “adds yet another uncertainty to the world economy and increases the costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” the European Commission said.

The US president announced yesterday, Friday, that duties on steel and aluminum will increase from next Wednesday to 50%, in a new escalation of his protectionism attack.

After returning to the White House, Donald Trump made the duties one of the central points of his policy.

After a period of tensions, Europe hoped for a “new impetus” in the negotiations, following the telephone conference that Donald Trump and Commission President Ursula von der Lajen a week ago.

European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic and Haward Lutnik’s US counterpart have met several times in recent days.

New discussions may also take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, on the sidelines of the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, where we western countries participate mainly.
