New fires broke out in the area where the partially damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is owned by Russian troops, is located, according to Ukrainian authorities.
“Large fires broke out in the blockade zone, which could have very serious consequences,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk told Telegram last night.
“It is currently impossible to completely control and extinguish the fires, due to the occupation of the blockade zone by the Russian occupying forces,” she insisted.
THE International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced yesterday that the security situation at the Ukrainian nuclear power plants remains unchanged. He estimated last week that the fires around Chernobyl did not pose a major radiological risk, at least for now.
The IAEA no longer receives direct data from Chernobyl as of March 9th. He expressed concern yesterday Sunday that the shift of the station staff has not changed since March 20th.
The factory was occupied by the Russian army on February 24, the first day of the invasion.
The plant’s No. 4 reactor exploded in 1986, causing what is described as the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history. It was covered by two sarcophagi, the first being built by the Soviets and damaged, while the second, more modern, was installed in 2019.
The other three reactors were phased out after the disaster, the last in 2000.
