The Russian forces are said to have left the occupied Slavutic town, which is located next to Chernobyl nuclear power plantafter protests by residents.
According to Reuters, Mayor Yuri Fomichev said in a video he uploaded on Monday that the troops had completed “the work they had to do” and left the city.
The Russian forces occupied Slavutic on Saturday and arrested the mayor.
As soon as the news became known, hundreds of locals took to the streets waving flags and the Russians released the mayor.
Many of them live in Slavutic workers of its nuclear plant Chernobyl.
New fires in Chernobyl
According to the Ukrainian authorities, they broke out new fires in the zone where the partially damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
“Large fires broke out in the blockade zone, which could have very serious consequences,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk told Telegram last night.
“It is currently impossible to completely control and extinguish the fires, due to the occupation of the blockade zone by the Russian occupying forces,” she insisted.
UN calls for development of UN special mission to guard Chernobyl
THE Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Verestsukcomplained that the extinguishing fires is blocked by the Russian army and radioactive particles may be dispersed into the atmosphere due to them.
He called on the United Nations Security Council to declare special protection regime the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Irina Verestsuk argued that a special UN mission should be sent to take care of the area, according to the Ukrainian newspaper Pravda.
“As far as nuclear safety is concerned, the irresponsible and unprofessional actions of the Russian army pose a serious threat not only to Ukraine but also to hundreds of millions of other Europeans,” she said.
“That is why we call on the UN Security Council to take immediate action to demilitarize the Chernobyl nuclear disarmament zone and to develop a special mission,” he said.
