The political world in the US is shocked, after the attack by two politicians of the Minnesota state in their homes on Saturday, in an action that Governor Tim Walts described as “politically motivated attempted murder”.

The attacks were killed by Democratic MP Melissa Hortman, and Senator John Hoffman was seriously injured.

Police are looking for the suspect, Vance Luther Bowelter, who remains unmistakable.

Representatives of the whole US political spectrum condemned the attacks. President Donald Trump said “so horrible violence will not be tolerated”.

Democratic Senator Amy Klobusar, who represents Minnesota, said it was “an attack on everything that our democracy is embodied”.

Who were the victims

According to Minnesota Governor, the state of the State Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were murdered in their home, are dead.

Hortman had served in the Minnesota Parliament for 20 years and served as president of the House in 2019–2025.

State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot and seriously injured, but survived.

Both politicians belong to the Democratic Party.

What happened

So far, local authorities have confirmed that the attacks took place in the early morning hours of Saturday in the city of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

The head of the State Criminal Investigations Service, Dru Evans, said at 02:00 local time a police call for the incident at Hoffman’s house.

At 03:35 a second call followed when police officers went to check Hortman’s house in the city of Chablin.

Police exchanged fire with the suspect on the spot, but he managed to escape. It has since been ongoing a manhunt.

According to authorities, the perpetrator was attending the police officer, driving a patrol vehicle and had a signal and uniform.

Who is the suspect

Police are looking for a single suspect: 57 -year -old Vance Luther Bowelter. No details have been made public about his possible motives.

Boelter was a former political appointed official and had served as a member of the state’s same state planning with Hoffman.

“We do not know what the nature of their relationship was, nor if they knew personally,” Evans said.

Brookly Park Police Chief Mark Broley said authorities found a manifesto and a list of targets in the perpetrator’s vehicle.

Among the goals, according to a confirmation of her office, was the US Democratic Senator by Minnesota, Tina Smith.

Boelter, according to his online resume, works as a security contractor with experience in Africa and the Middle East and has been a managing executive to companies in Minnesota.

He allegedly sent a worrying message to his friends in Minneapolis, where he was renting a room.

“I will miss it for a while. Maybe I die soon, I just wanted to tell you that I love you and wish things hadn’t come like that. “

For security reasons, the commander urged Minnesota citizens to avoid involvement in demonstrations against the Trump government on Saturday, scheduled for the state and other US areas.

Attacks bring the growing problem of political violence in the United States.

President Trump has survived two attempts at murder in 2024.

In April of that year, the home of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Sapiro became arson.
