The Pentagon is developing six cyber warplanes of the US Navy with 200 troops in Germany as the US strengthens its forces in Eastern Europe amid Russia’s war with Ukraine.
According to CNN, Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby told reporters Monday that six Navy E / A-18G Growler aircraft are being deployed from Whidbey Naval Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. at Spangd Air Force Base in Germany.
In addition, they will be accompanied by about 240 Navy personnel, pilots and maintenance personnel, he said.
Kirby clarified that “Growlers were not sent to be used against Russian forces fighting in Ukraine and” that the development was not done in response to any incident. “
“They are being developed in line with our efforts to strengthen NATO’s deterrent and defense capabilities “along this east wing,” Kirby said.
The deployment of the Navy adds to the thousands of U.S. troops deployed to NATO countries in Eastern Europe in the last five weeks since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.
“The six Growlers provide a unique electronic warfare capability to NATO that can help defend our partners and allies from any future attack,” Brendan Steeles, a former E / A-18G squadron commander, told the network.
“The Growler can stop Russian surface-to-air missiles from targeting NATO aircraft. Despite their regular failures, the Russians retain the ability to locate and shoot down our aircraft if they so decide. “The Growler can protect our forces from early warning, monitoring and radar targeting …”, he continued.
