The Ukrainian forces recaptured the city of Trostianets near Sumi in eastern Ukraine (map) as they try to repel Russian forces from Kherson in the south, a senior Pentagon official said Monday.
Speaking to reporters, the official added that Russian forces have not noted “No progress” to Kyiv and are located 9 to 12 miles (15-20 km) from the city center to the north and northwest and 34 miles (55 km) outside the city to the east.
In addition, the official said that it remains unclear to the US why the Russian forces are now giving priority to operations in the eastern part of Donbass. The strategy could be an attempt to gain leverage in the negotiations or that the Russians are “re-evaluating” their goals, the official commented.
The US official also said that the war-torn city of Mariupol was “hit” by fire. large-scale by the Russians.
He further added that the United States could not confirm the Ukrainian claim that the country’s forces had recaptured the city of Irpin, northwest of Kiev, from the Russians.
The Russian forces have “Stuck” in several parts of Ukraine, a senior Pentagon official told CNN. They are largely immobilized, the senior official told American journalists.
The mayor of Irpin, near Kyiv, said in the meantime that Ukrainian forces had regained full control of the city, which was one of the main points of the battles with the Russian troops near the capital.
