Faced with the greatest challenge while at the helm of the Commission lies the Ursula von der Layenafter political groups threatened to withdraw their support on her face after her decision to withdraw a central environmental legislation – the new “Green Claims Directive”.

“We are on the verge of an institutional crisis,” Valérie Hayer, president of the Renew Europe liberal team, told Politico.

Von der Laien comes from the center -right European People’s Party and, although the largest team in the European Parliament, is based on the votes of the Socialists and Liberals to achieve its goal. Now, the Commission’s ability to introduce laws is in danger of being blocked if the teams withdraw their support on her face.

The Commission announced on Friday that it is withdrawing the Green Claims Directive – a landmark that would consider companies accountable for unfounded environmental allegations – although it has already gone through many stages of the legislative process.

This move was applauded by the right -wing European conservatives and reformers, the far -right “patriots for Europe” by French Marin Lepen but also by Hungarian Victor Orban.

“If the Commission withdraws the text, we in the Renew team believe that this act puts the platform of the pro -European majority at a serious risk,” Hayer said.

Socialists and liberals have accused von der Laen of being argued with far -right forces – which demand from the EU to abandon all its green policies – and that it ignores the will of their teams who voted in power.

While there are no official coalitions in the European Parliament, the center -right EPP, the Socialists and the Liberals have been based on each other for support and signed a cooperation agreement in November.

However, EPP has repeatedly aligned with right and far -right political groups in the House to promote certain measures, determine the agenda or reject green initiatives

‘We will stop protecting her’

The withdrawal of the directive this week may be The drop that overflowed the glass for socialists and liberalswho have also been frustrated by some other actions of her Pfizergate, where the EU court ruled against the Commission for its refusal to publish messages between von der Laien and the head of the Pfizer vaccine company during the Covid pandemic.

“We protected her on the subject of Pfizergate, but if it goes on, that is over,” a senior Liberal official said. “We can stop any partnership with the EPP, freezing the legislative process.”

“The problem now is that the Commission is also accountable to the alternative to the right majority, not on the central platform,” the official said.

A spokesman for the EPP said the EPP welcomed the Commission’s announcement, arguing that the current text was “leading to a bureaucratic nightmare for companies”.

In addition to their anger for the cancellation of the proposed law itself, both central parties accuse EPP and von der Laen of being bypass the EU legislative process. This bill was already under negotiation between Parliament and the EU Council – which represented national governments – since both institutions had already approved their positions after months of working.

A socialist official added that their situation has brought to the point of questioning “the whole basis of support for von der Laien, and if he really proceeds, this will be considered as a breach of the platform, no other platform is left.”

“The Commission should be aware of the importance of alliance and commitments,” said the chairman of the Socialist and Democrats Group, Iratxe Garcia.
