In a statement that overturns his former rhetoric, Donald Trump left the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not only be confined to Ukraine, but aimed at a broader territorial expansion of Russia in other areas.
In particular, at a press conference at the end of his participation in the NATO Summit, Trump told Putin in a recent phone conversation: “Help me reach an agreement with you” to end the war in Ukraine.
At the same time, the US president revealed that he intends to speak soon with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine, noting that “Vladimir Putin must really end this war”.
Referring to his meeting with the Ukrainian president, held on the sidelines of the summit, Trump said that Zelenski “wishes to end the war”.
Concerning the US financial contribution to Ukraine’s defense, Donald Trump said Washington “will see what happens”, leaving all the potential. At the same time, he said that the United States would consider whether they can dispose of Patriot missiles in Kyiv.
Asked why he has not yet managed to end the war in Ukraine, the US president replied “because it is more difficult than many think”, stressing that Putin is “more difficult”, but said that “he really wants to end this war, people are dead.”
“Honestly, I had some problems with Zelenski. You may have read about them, “Trump continued, referring to the particularly intense meeting between the two men in the White House earlier this year.
Subsequently, however, Trump referred to the other wars who claims to end: Israel – Iran, Rwanda – People’s Republic of Congo and India – Pakistan.
“I finished it with a series of phone calls,” he said, referring to India’s conflict with Pakistan.
During his departure from the NATO summit, which was largely evolved as he wished, Trump said he left with a more positive impression of the alliance he had previously.
“I came here because it was something I was supposed to do,” he said, “but I left with a little different perspective.”
It is recalled that Trump has repeatedly attacked NATO members, claiming that they are “stealing” the United States, not spending enough on their defense.
Even on the way to the Summit in the Netherlands, he appeared sparingly in the application of Article 5 of the Collective Defense Alliance.
However, his comments on his departure from the Summit suggest that the efforts of NATO members in the last week to welcome him – among other things with the agreement to strengthen defense spending – have rendered.
“They need the United States, and without the United States, it will not be the same,” he said.
