The German government today expressed its concern about democracy and the rule of law in Turkey after the arrest of 126 CHP executives in Smyrna, and also questioning the independence of Turkish justice.

“The recent wave of arrests is re -alarming on the Turkish judicial system and raises doubts about the independence of Turkish judicial authority and police investigations,” a foreign ministry spokesman added, adding that “the impression is that the real politician is not the case.”

The same spokesman also noted that the numerous arrests of CHP executives, the largest opposition party in Turkey, in its stronghold, Smyrna, have stepped up Berlin’s concerns about democracy and the rule of law in Turkey.

“With yesterday’s wave of arrests in Smyrna, we see that the mass suppression of CHP is taking on increasing dimensions. We expect the claims to clarify as soon as possible and with transparency in the context of a normal legal process, “said a German Foreign Ministry spokesman.
