Denmark seeks to persuade Europe to exploit all of its legal arsenal against Hungary for the Budapest Blocking Breaks of Budapest, even Article 7, the so -called “nuclear” selection of the Union in its quiver.
“We are still seeing violations of fundamental values,” Danish Minister of European Affairs, Marie Biere, said in a journalist in the orCeans, where the European Commission is located in the face of Copenhagen’s assumption of the EU Council of Council.
Article 7 is a clause in the EU Treaty that allows countries to vote on blocking or imposing sanctions on a member that violates the block rules. It is widely regarded as a “nuclear” legal weapon, which the EU has so far not used although Brussels has many times noted that Hungary has violated the block laws.
Biere said the block should also consider restricting access to EU funds for countries that violate European law.
Another major issue for Denmark concerns the EU’s enlargement. The minister has denounced Hungary’s continued opposition to the process of integrating Ukraine into the European Union, adding that Denmark is “willing to consider all political and practical solutions to proceed”.
If the EU countries decide to escalate the current article 7 procedure, they could deprive Hungary its voting rights to aspects of European policy, such as enlargement, by removing Budapest’s ability to veto Ukraine. However, diplomats warn that at least full support is required by Paris and Berlin to rally the rest of the block – which has not existed so far.
