Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier assured earlier today in support of Germany in defense of Lithuania’s freedom today during a visit to Vilnius for the country’s national holiday.
“With the placement of a German brigade in Lithuania, we make a constant promise: your safety is our own safety. Anyone who defends Lithuania, defends Europe and defends European values, “Mr Steinmeier said, but without nominally mentioning Russia.
The German president’s visit also includes a meeting with soldiers serving in the 45th Bundeswehr armor, which is parked in Lithuania by missing the installation of a German battle unit. By the end of 2027 in Lithuania there will be about 5000 soldiers of the German Armed Forces, as part of the strengthening of the Eastern NATO wing and the protection of Lithuania by a possible Russian attack. The country borders the Kalingrad Russian enclave.
Lithuanian President Gitana Naoussa, for his part, described the German Brigade as a “powerful message of European solidarity and responsibility” and thanked Mr Steinmeier for Germany’s determination to stand on the side of Lithuania at Europe’s border.
