The European Commission today published the fourth review of the implementation of environmental policy. The overview supports the implementation of environmental legislation and increases the awareness of the importance of the European Union (EU) environmental rules in order to ensure the well -being, competitiveness and environmental security in the European Union.
This review identifies common trends at the EU level, based on individual reports by country of its 27th Member States. The overview includes a wide range of data on how well the Member States protect the quality of the air that citizens breathe, the water they drink and the nature they enjoy.
The report demonstrates the urgent need to improve the implementation of EU environmental legislation. In addition, the review determines specific priority actions to improve the implementation of the legislation in each Member State.
The cost of the non -implementation of EU environmental legislation, through air pollution and waters, waste and nature degradation, is estimated at EUR 180 billion per year for the EU. This amount corresponds to approximately 1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the EU. while ensuring equitable conditions of competition for companies throughout the single Union market.
The Commission has allocated various EU funds to Member States to meet their investment needs of approximately € 122 billion per year, to achieve environmental goals and priorities. Most Member States must further utilize these funds to enhance their ability to effectively implement the legislation.
