The European Union is ready to take the necessary measures to defend its interests if the United States is imposing 30% of European products on August 1, European Commission President Ursula von der Laene said on Saturday.
Von der Layen, who is leading the EU executive arm, said in a written statement that the bloc remains willing “to continue working to reach an agreement until August 1st”.
“Few economies in the world are compared to the level of openness and the European Union’s commitment to fair commercial practices,” he added.
“We will take all necessary measures to defend EU interests, including the adoption of similar countermeasures, provided that it is necessary,” he concluded.
Donald Trump opened a new front in the US-European Union trade, as it announced the imposition of a 30% duty on all EU goods imported from the 1st August.
In a letter sent to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Laeen, Trump states that “from August 1, 2025, we will impose a European Union on a duty only 30% on its products sent to the United States separately from special tariffs per category of products.”
In the same letter he says that “if for any reason you decide to increase your duties and retaliate, then the percentage you choose to increase will be added to the 30% we impose.”
