Heavy rainfall swept areas of the northeast US on Monday night, causing floods in areas of New York and New Jersey that stopped vehicles on the streets, closed subway lines and led to an emergency declaration.

Warnings for sudden floods had been issued for areas of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas, as heavy rainfall was moving towards the area.

New Jersey Governor Fil Murphy declared a state of emergency due to sudden flood and heavy rainfall, advising people to stay in their homes and avoid unnecessary travel.

A video posted on social media by CBS showed that flood waters closed a main street in New Jersey’s Scotch Plains, stopping buses.

Some buses and trains in New Jersey were delayed due to floods.

In New York, subway services were suspended, while other lines were operating with severe flood delays, according to the Metropolitan Transport Authority. The New York Emergency Services Service wrote in X that areas of the city are affected by sudden floods.
