Solz to consider Moscow’s demand for payment for gas in rubles, Kremlin says

by

The Kremlin announced today that the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the German chancellor Olaf Solts agreed in a telephone conversation that experts from both countries would discuss how the Russian gas exports could be paid in rubles, the agency reported Reuters citing the TASS.

Russia has said it plans to demand payments in rubles (instead of euros or dollars) for its energy exports, especially in the face of economic sanctions imposed on it by the West over the war in Ukraine. on which Germany depends.

All indications are that Putin will implement his decision to accept only rubles to pay for gas, as the relevant services have been activated and Russian MPs have stated this directly. More specifically, Vyacheslav Volodin stated that both Russia’s natural gas and oil, as well as the products it produces and exports to Western markets, should be repaid in rubles.

The statement was echoed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov, who said it was “an idea that should and could work.”
