Washington cannot “force” Israel to do anything, US special envoy Thomas Barak said today from Beirut, answering a journalist’s question about Lebanon’s request to guarantee the US that the Israeli will stop.
Last month, the US proposed to high -ranking Lebanon officials a “roadmap” for Hezbollah’s complete disarmament within four months, in return for the end of Israeli bumps and the departure of Israeli forces.
Beirut asked Washington to act as a “guarantor” to ensure that Israel would completely withdraw its forces and stop attacks on Hezbollah members, as the armed organization begins to testify.
When asked about these guarantees, following his meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Barack told reporters that the US “has no job to try to force Israel to do anything”. He added that the US is not pushing Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, nor consider imposing sanctions on Lebanese officials if the organization is not disarmed.
“There are no consequences, there is no threat, there is no whip,” he said.
Barack has been a close adviser to President Donald Trump for years, who appointed him ambassador to Turkey and a special envoy to Syria. This was his third trip to Lebanon within a month to discuss the roadmap, which includes disarmament of non -state armed groups, to economic reforms and improving the country’s relations with neighboring Syria.
Israel and Hezbollah clashed last year, with the war ending with the US mediation, with an agreement that required Israeli forces to leave Lebanon and Beirut to disarm all government organizations from the south. Although Hezbollah handed over to the Lebanese army some weapons from its warehouses in southern Lebanon, Israel says the organization has violated the truce as it is trying to reconstitute. Lebanon and Hezbollah accuse Israel for a breach of the agreement because his army has not left at least five strategic border positions and launches blows against people and buildings who, according to Israel, are members of Hezbollah and warehouses.
