The Foreign Ministers of Ukraine Dmitro Koulempa and Russia Sergei Lavrov may meet “in a week or two”, their Turkish counterpart said today Mevlüt Tsavousoglu.
“There could be a meeting at a higher level, at least between ministers in a week or two,” Tsavousoglou said in a televised interview, adding that “it is impossible to predict a date.”
He also stressed that Turkey would like to host such a meeting “as a sincere mediator”.
“What is important is for the two sides to meet and agree on a ceasefire that will last,” he said. “It is impossible to negotiate under the pressure of arms,” he said.
In terms of evacuation of civilians from Mariupolwhich is besieged by Russian forces, for which Turkey is cooperating with France and Greece, Tsavousoglu said that Ankara proposed to open “two humanitarian corridors to Russia and Ukraine”.
“No one should pressure civilians to choose one or the other of these corridors. “Everyone should be able to go where they want,” he noted.
Returning to the talks held on Tuesday between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Constantinople Tsavousoglu estimated that they had yielded “the most significant results” since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
“The parties have reached a compromise on some issues. “Negotiations must continue for others, such as Ukraine’s neutrality status,” he explained. According to the Turkish minister, this status will depend on “guarantees” given in Kyiv.
However, he acknowledged that “some measures taken to reduce tensions are not being implemented in the field.”
At the same time, Tsavousoglu estimated that the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who was present at Tuesday’s meeting, was working “honestly” to end the war. As the Turkish minister explained, Abramovich has been mediating between Kiev and Moscow since the Russian invasion began.
